Dear 91±¬ÁÏ Community,
I am very pleased to announce that two of our 2022-23 faculty searches have successfully concluded and that two exceptional new colleagues have recently joined our faculty. My gratitude goes out to the Chairs, members, and support staff of these search committees for their important work.
Asian & Asian Diaspora Studies in Education
Dr. Shozab Raza begins a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Justice Education, effective July 1, 2023. Dr. Raza received a PhD in Anthropology, with a collaborative specialization in South Asian Studies, from the University of Toronto in 2022. During 2022-23 he was a Postdoctoral Associate with the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University. Dr. Raza is an interdisciplinary scholar of Asian Studies, whose research focuses on racial empire, capitalism, and insurgent epistemologies and practice in South Asia, contributing to debates across South Asian studies, post/decolonial studies, and critical political economy. Dr. Raza’s publication record includes 5 peer-reviewed articles, one of which is the winner of the President’s Graduate Writing Award of the American Anthropological Association’s Society for Humanistic Anthropology, in addition to several public essays, op-eds, and media appearances. He has over seven years of experience teaching across anthropology, South Asian studies and media studies, as well as a deep engagement with South Asian diasporas through his community and media activism.
Educational Policy & Equity
Dr. Beyhan Farhadi begins a tenure stream appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in the Department of Leadership, Higher and Adult Education, effective July 15, 2023. Dr. Farhadi received a PhD in Geography and Planning from the University of Toronto in 2019, and recently completed a postdoctoral fellowship at York University’s Faculty of Education. While at York, she also served as research cluster lead for projects on Community Engagement and Public Scholarship and Digital Learning, Technology, and New Pedagogies at the Institute for Research on Digital Literacies. Dr. Farhadi is also a Research Associate with the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. Her interdisciplinary, critically-oriented scholarship uses qualitative methods, including ethnography and case studies, to evaluate the impact of online education and public policy on social inequity in schooling. Dr. Farhadi’s publication record includes 6 refereed journal articles and dozens of contributions to policy and media outlets. She is currently working on a book manuscript, under contract with the University of Toronto Press, entitled Online Learning and the Politics of Access in Public Education. Her public scholarship has extended to numerous media appearances, community panels, webinars and podcasts, and she has extensive teaching experience both at the secondary and post-secondary levels.
