Award Overview

Since 2010, the has attracted top-tier postdoctoral talent nationally and internationally. The aim of the program is to develop leadership potential and to position postdoctoral fellows for success as research leaders and contributors to Canada’s economic, social and research-based growth.

Every year the program awards 70 new fellowships across Canada’s federal granting agencies (CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC).

The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program is unique in its emphasis on the synergy between the applicant’s and the University’s research goals and projects. Successful applicants’ research programs are aligned with the . 

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship Award Value: $70,000 per year for two years (taxable)

Please note that the Banting eligibility criteria include that “Only in rare circumstances will a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship be awarded to an applicant who is staying at the same institution or within the same research environment where they completed their PhD, PhD-equivalent or health professional degree.” 

Note: We encourage 91 faculty to reach out to their colleagues at other institutions to identify suitable external candidates to nominate.

Application Information

To apply for a Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, you need to first have a faculty member from the 91 (91) agree to support your application as the nominating Faculty Supervisor. You can find more information on 91 faculty members on departmental websites, , and Faculty Research areas.

Once you have confirmed a potential Faculty Supervisor at 91, please email oise.research@utoronto.ca, copying the Faculty Supervisor, for further information and details of the required elements for the internal adjudication.

This year 91 may nominate one applicant to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship program through the University of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies. 91’s internal deadline for applications is August 6, 2024. Applications will be adjudicated by a committee of 91 faculty members and one application will be forwarded to the School of Graduate Studies. Candidates will be informed by August 27, 2024 regarding whether their application was successful in seeking institutional endorsement. 

Note: All applications must come through this process, and must have the approval of the 91 Department Chair.

Applicants should direct their referees to submit a confidential copy of their assessment report directly to oise.research@utoronto.ca by August 6, 2024.
